The Right to Say Nothing

I read this passage by Gilles Deleuze a few years ago. It has been rattling around in my head for the last few weeks again, so I thought I would share it for consideration and critique:
We sometimes go on as though people can’t express themselves. In fact they’re always expressing themselves. The sorriest couples are those where the woman can’t be preoccupied or tired without the man saying “What’s wrong? Say something…,” or the man, without the woman saying…, and so on. Radio and television have spread this spirit everywhere, and we’re riddled with pointless talk, insane quantities of words and images. Stupidity’s never blind or mute. So it’s not a problem of getting people to express themselves but of providing little gaps of solitude and silence in which they might eventually find something to say. Repressive forces don’t stop people expressing themselves but rather force them to express themselves. What a relief to have nothing to say, the right to say nothing, because only then is there a chance of framing the rare, and ever rarer, thing that might be worth saying. What we’re plagued by these days isn’t any blocking of communication, but pointless statements. But what we call the meaning of a statement is its point. That’s the only definition of meaning, and it comes to the same thing as a statement’s novelty. You can listen to people for hours, but what’s the point? … That’s why arguments are such a strain, why there’s never any point arguing. You can’t just tell someone what they’re saying is pointless. So you tell them it’s wrong. But what someone says is never wrong, the problem isn’t that some things are wrong, but that they’re stupid or irrelevant. That they’re already been said a thousand times. The notions of relevance, necessity, the point of something, are a thousand times more significant than the notion of truth. Not as substitutes for truth, but as the measure of the truth of what I’m saying. It’s the same in mathematics: Poincaré used to say that many mathematical theories are completely irrelevant, pointless. He didn’t say they were wrong—that wouldn’t have been so bad.
The concept of the “right to say nothing” is intriguing. While we might suppose that everyone possesses this right in some inherent sense, the opportunity to express this right is not evenly distributed. I’m thinking here of those who find themselves required to advocate for their own safety, security, and humanity. That said, we might also conceptualize social justice as a state wherein everyone can exercise the right to say nothing. But until such a time as this, is “the right to say nothing” more of a privilege than a right?
I’m fascinated by Deleuze’s observation that “repressive forces” compel constant self-expression, not constrain it. I feel like there is a lot that we could say here about corporate social media on this point.
Taken together, this passage prompts me to mull the idea that silence and solitude might be like corollaries of justice. While we often champion self-expression — raising the voice of the marginalized and oppressed — in our calculus of social progress, there’s also an inverse interpretation: a fair and equitable world is one where nobody is required (by nature of their identity, position, or circumstance) to say anything at all. If we entertain this hypothesis, we might want to reconsider whether the received wisdom that “everyone should advocate for their rights” is, in fact, moving us towards or away from a fair society? That is, if Delueze is correct in observing that “Repressive forces don’t stop people expressing themselves but rather force them to express themselves” then we, the lefty cheerleaders of raising the voices of the oppressed, might need to recalibrate a few assumptions.

My immediate reaction to this was Dalton in Dead Poet's Society "Exercising the right not to walk." As you say, exercising a right is often more of a privilege and the option is not always there for all.
Whether it be colour, creed, social status, there are those that, for whatever reason, have to work harder just to achieve parity, run faster just to stay still — saying or doing nothing is not an option.
Luis makes a very good point about categorisation, if feels self-defeating: in order to ensure inclusivity we only emphasise the divisions in a numbers game rather than elevate all.
The utopian ideal is for everyone to be recognised purely on merit irrespective of classification but, in our present society, the cries of colour-blindness, etc. add to the confusion. "You shall recognise my colour/race/religion..." — the right for acknowledgment is a different ballgame altogether but one that complicates matters, especially for lefty cheerleaders.
It's hard to imagine a route from where we are to the utopian ideal that not only pleases all but gets us there with the least amount of friction. An equal right to say or do nothing is a long way off.
